Your initial appointment will consist of an evaluation and description of your condition and an explanation of your treatment options. Occasionally, surgery can be performed on the same day as the consultation. However, we must know your specific condition, your medical history, your choice of treatment options and the most appropriate method of anesthesia for your care before we can determine the required length of time for treatment and the appropriate preoperative and postoperative preparation. Therefore, your surgery will usually be scheduled for a later time.
Occasionally, the emergency nature of your surgery or unique scheduling considerations requires that we schedule the surgery on the same day as the consultation. In the event that you are scheduled for consultation and surgery on the same day and you want to have IV anesthesia for your procedure, please have nothing to eat or drink for 8 hours prior to your appointment and, of course, you must have an adult who can drive you home. Please remember that a pre-operative evaluation and physical examination is still necessary prior to IV anesthesia and surgery. It is possible that your medical or oral situation will still require that the surgery be scheduled for a later date.
Please assist us by providing the following information at the time of your consultation:
Your surgical referral slip and any X-rays, if applicable. If your dentist or physician has taken x-rays, you may request that they forward them to our office. If there is not enough time, please pick them up and bring them to our office. If additional films are necessary, they can be taken at our facility.
A list of medications you are presently taking.
Details of conditions that may be of concern prior to surgery (i.e. diabetes, high blood pressure, artificial heart valves and joints, rheumatic fever, etc.).
Names of the doctors who manage your medical care.
If you have medical or dental insurance, bring all of the information and forms regarding your insurance to the consultation appointment. If your insurance contract requires an authorized referral by your primary care doctor, be sure to provide us with that authorization. This will save time and allow us to help you process any claims in a timely fashion.
IMPORTANT: All patients under the age of 18 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at the consultation visit.
